Audacity + PulseAudio + Ubuntu: problems goodbye!
Background: The forced introduction of PulseAudio as audio server (and by?) By default on Ubuntu 8:04 and 8.10 (and Fedora and other distros) has been a real tragedy for the amateur podcaster and size and using sound cuci Linux.
Audacity is one of the most popular and simple audio editor available for Linux (but also for Windows and Mac), because libraries PortAudio, is not married with Pulse and many nussuno proposed workaround has never really worked, at least in my case. In fact using Audacity on Linux was a hell for almost a year.
Then he came. A saint. David Henningsson.
Quoting his words:
“Kevin Kofler has developed a patch that allows you to use audacity to backend device not mmap-like PulseAudio. I have tested this patch, I modified it slightly and I made a package for Ubuntu 8.10.
If you want to try it, the simplest method is the modified version installarare from my ppa:
https: / / launchpad.net / ~ diwic / + archive / ppa ”
Needless to say, I do not even seem real!
I immediately added the Personal Package Archive (PPA) of David to the list of my repositories, I updated and audacity.
The first tests are very encouraging, although I have limited to some experiments, the difference jumps immediately to the eye. First are two new device “ALSA: pulse” for inputs and outputs:
Also recording and reproduction, that the first test done correctly and without conflict, through the control panel of PulseAudio (and thus through the server), as shown by the following image, you can enlarge with a click:
I tried recording from the microphone (via hardware mixer) and I have not had any problems, if not a little ‘clip that are alleviated by working with the mixer (software). Record directly from a stream as a video youtube returns a very low volume, and I had problems to record from Skype (registration is accelerated), but Skype on this machine with you, so that the input pulse does not work and on the contrary leaving, I must point it directly to ALSA.
Regardless, this is a great news, can return to use Audacity without too many problems is a dream come true.
The patch has already been included in Jaunty, 9:04 then Ubuntu will not suffer these problems.
