Facebook does not sell your photos to advertisers
While she wanted to complete a quiz Facebook, a lady sees her own image profile used in an ad for a dating site: the controversy begins. After some changes in regulation noticed the “Facebooksphère” is very attentive to the slightest breach of privacy by the social network. But after rumors of alleged pirates from Italy (Stefania Colace and Alejandro Spintz), the firm of Mark Zuckerberg must now defend itself from selling photos of profiles of its members to advertisers.
All of Cheryl Smith, blogger, in which a ticket was surprised to see his picture used in ads for dating sites, with the mention of “hot singles are waiting for you” (of sexy singles are waiting for you).
Starting from this situation, two different interpretations have resulted in two separate rumors circulating on the blogs of the world:
* – Uses Facebook photos of its members to advertise their knowledge
* – Facebook sells photos of its members to advertisers to make money on their backs
Anyway, the blogs (some well known) have relayed this mass fake and even changing the privacy settings of their readers, especially the Settings / Privacy / News and wall / Facebook Ads.
But the settings and advice was wrong, because they totally wrong target!
Indeed, the “Advertising Facebook” relates exclusively to the internal announcement, not the advertisements provided by regulated independent of Facebook. For internal ads, Facebook for example heard those famous pages “xxx is a fan of” or “yyy love” with xxx and yyy the names of your friends.
There has therefore been diversion of photos of Cheryl, but by a company or companies wholly independent of Facebook! And although the company has officially denied the rumor continues to run and to invade the walls of facebookiens with messages like “FACEBOOK now allows outside advertising networks to use the photos you publish, without your permission.” or “WARNING WARNING TO FOLLOW: From Friday Facebook will use your photos in banner ads that appear on the profile of your contacts. It’s legal, it was written in the form. To avoid this: “settings” / “confidentiality” / “News and Wall” / tab “Facebook Ads” tick “person”.
The blog of Figaro Technotes summarizes very well a few lines in this case:
* – The advertisement showing the photo of the young woman has nothing to do with Facebook. This is an advertisement proposed by an advertiser, in an external application.
* – The application developers can use your profile photo to display to your friends if they obtain authorization (during installation), but not for engaging in misleading advertising, as c That was the case here.
* – The advertising networks that use pictures severely profile, without ever obtaining the authorization, violate the rules of Facebook. Two of them were excluded.
* – The recommended setting has no impact on these wild advertisements. It gives the right to show your Facebook profile to your friends in the pages of fans you are a subscriber, and other internal areas of advertising (the “social ads”).
The dull reputation traine social network does not allow any more mistakes. And even though it shows good will, there are always small filous to use the Facebook image to carry out actions unsavory.
As we have seen together in the ticket on the Italian pirates, the most dangerous in the social network is external applications that the user adds. Facebook said in effect when these digital gadgets are not developed by his team: it is then for people to see the publisher of the application, and to put our faith or not.
